My all time favorite type of a jacket is a blazer. Women's Blazers are what I love to wear the most for any occasion. From wearing a blazer with jeans for a date night or lunch with the girls, to a blazer over a dress or pencil skirt for work or a business meeting, they give you a polished and chic style and really complete your look.
Its always interesting to find out a little history about what we are wearing and where they came from, so today here’s a brief history of the women's blazer as we know it.
After doing a little research I found two different stories that have both contributed to where the origins of the blazer came from.
1. Lady Margaret Boat Club
The first story dates back to 1825 when the “Lady Margaret Boat Club” was founded by members of St John’s College in Cambridge England. They wore bright scarlet red colored flannel jackets and since the color “blazed”, they were named the “blazers”.
2. H.M.S Blazer
The second story dates back to 1837 when Queen Victoria decided to carry out an inspection of one of the vessels of the Royal Navy, named the H.M.S Blazer. In an effort to impress the Queen, the commander decided to get new uniforms for his men. Eventually they settled on an outfit that included a double breasted jacket with brass royal navy buttons. Since then these types of jackets have been called blazers.
These days a blazer is a type of jacket that resembles a men’s suit jacket but cut more casually. They can be single breasted or double breasted with different types and sizes of collars and lapels. They can be trimmed or solid with a different types of buttons. With blazers being my favorite type of women’s jacket, I always try to include some in my Jacket Society line every season and I am happy to say I have quite a few more new ones coming for this fall that I will be showing you over the next few weeks right here.
Today I want to introduce you to our brand new Milano blazer which is a beautifully cut menswear inspired blazer in a novelty basket weave Italian fabric. The Milano is a very versatile blazer as you can wear it to the office or casually over jeans. The look I styled here today for you all is a bit more career inspired especially because I wanted to style it with a nice crisp white shirt, as I have not shown you this type of a look before. The shirt can be replaced with a print or solid top and that will change the whole look of the outfit. I have paired today’s look with a pair of wider leg black trousers, but you can easily wear it with basic trousers or skinny pants. To give the outfit a bit of edge, I added one of our brand new animal print scarves and my red Prada bag. I love the mix of the pattern of the jacket and the animal print scarf. This blazer will also look great with jeans and some killer heels, which is a look I will style for you in the future.
